about

My second collection of folk songs, this time very loosely based around the themes of love and war, as the title suggests, with a few more upbeat songs in between to lighten the mood somewhat! Most of these tracks are traditional tunes, many of them learnt around a campfire. Please teach them to others to help keep the folk tradition alive!

Track Name: Deep Blue Sea
LYRICS:

Deep blue sea, Willie, deep blue sea,
Deep blue sea, Willie, deep blue sea,
Deep blue sea, Willie, deep blue sea.
It was Willie what got drownded in the deep blue sea.

Dig his grave with a silver spade,
Dig his grave with a silver spade,
Dig his grave with a silver spade.
It was Willie what got drownded in the deep blue sea.

Sew his shroud with a silken thread,
Sew his shroud with a silken thread,
Sew his shroud with a silken thread.
It was Willie what got drownded in the deep blue sea.

Lower him down on a golden chain,
Lower him down on a golden chain,
Lower him down on a golden chain,
It was Willie what got drownded in the deep blue sea.
Track Name: Forty Long Miles
LYRICS:

It's forty long miles I've traveled this day,
I saw a fine cottage beside the highway,
Such that I never seen before,
Such that I never seen before.

I boldly stepped up and I knocked at the door,
And a pretty young lassie skipped over the floor,
Such that I never had seen before,
Such that I never had seen before.

"Oh it hails and rains and snows and blows,
And I am wet through all my clothes.
So I pray you please let me in,
So I pray you please let me in.”

“Oh no, oh no, that never can be,
For no one's awake in this house but me.
So I dare not let you in,
So I dare not let you in.

My mother and father are fast asleep,
My brother is out, he is watching the sheep,
So I dare not let you in,
So I dare not let you in."

Well I turned myself around to go,
Till kind affection she did show,
Saying "Come on, I'll let you in",
Saying "Come on I'll let you in."

“Take off you wet and put on your dry,
Then go to my bed and quietly lie.
And shortly I will be there,
And shortly I will be there.”

They spent the night in sweet content,
And the very next day to the hills they went,
And he loved her for all of his days,
And he loved her for all of his days.
Track Name: Johnny Won't You Come Home Soon?
LYRICS:

Here, Oh Johnny, won't you come home soon?
Winter is coming and I'm all alone.
A candle is burning in the window, love,
And the wild geese they are flying home.

A young man's love is something to behold.
First it burns but then it soon turns cold.
He'll whisper in the moonlight and your hand he'll hold,
Then he'll vanish with the morning dew.

And it's here, Oh Johnny, won't you come home soon?
Winter is coming and I'm all alone.
A candle is burning in the window, love,
And the wild geese they are flying home.

He will court you by a meadow in the summertime.
When first you love, it is the sweetest time.
He'll promise a golden ring and then one day
He will vanish with the morning dew.

And it's here, Oh Johnny, won't you come home soon?
Winter is coming and I'm all alone.
A candle is burning in the window, love,
And the wild geese they are flying home.

You'll be waiting for his footsteps in the lonely room.
Listen by the window. He'll be coming soon.
Your heart it will be breaking by the early dawn.
For he's vanished with the morning dew.

And it's here, Oh Johnny, won't you come home soon?
Winter is coming and I'm all alone.
A candle is burning in the window, love,
And the wild geese they are flying home.

So come all you maidens who are in your prime,
The young man's love is like the rarest wine.
When first you taste it is the golden time,
Sweeter than the morning dew.

And it's here, Oh Johnny, won't you come home soon?
Winter is coming and I'm all alone.
A candle is burning in the window, love,
And the wild geese they are flying home.
Track Name: The Nightingale
LYRICS:

As I went a walking one morning in May,
I saw a young couple so fondly did stray.
And one was a young maid so sweet and so fair
And the other was a soldier and a bold Grenadier.

And they kissed so sweet and comforting as they clung to each other,
They went arming along the road like sister and brother,
They went arming along the road 'till they came to the stream
And they both sat down together, love, to hear the nightingale sing.

Then out of his knapsack he drew a fine fiddle
And he played her such merry tunes that you ever did hear
And he played her such merry tunes that the valleys did ring
And the young maid started weeping to hear the nightingale sing.

And they kissed so sweet and comforting as they clung to each other,
They went arming along the road like sister and brother,
They went arming along the road 'till they came to the stream
And they both sat down together, love, to hear the nightingale sing.

Oh, I am off to India for seven long years,
Drinking wines and strong whisky instead of strong beer
And if ever I return again 'twill be in the spring
And we'll both sit down together, love, to hear the nightingale sing.

And they kissed so sweet and comforting as they clung to each other,
They went arming along the road like sister and brother,
They went arming along the road 'till they came to the stream
And they both sat down together, love, to hear the nightingale sing.

"And then", says the fair maid, "won't you marry me?"
"Oh no", said the soldier, "however can that be?"
For I've my own wife at home in my own country
And she is the fairest little maid that you ever did see.

And we kiss so sweet and comforting as they cling to each other,
We go arming along the road like sister and brother,
We do arming along the road 'till we come to the stream
And we both sat down together, love, to hear the nightingale sing.
Track Name: Polly on the Shore
LYRICS:

Come all you wild young men
And a warning take by me,
Never to lead your single life astray
And into no bad company.

As I myself have done,
It being in the merry month of May,
When I was pressed by a sea-captain
On board a man-o-war I was sent away.

Oh we sailed on the ocean so wide
And our bonny, bonny flag we let fly.
Let every man stand true to his guns
For the Lord knows who must die.

And our captain was wounded full sore
And so were the rest of his men.
The main mast rigging was scattered on the deck
So that we were obliged to give in.

And the decks were all spattered with blood
And so loudly the cannons did roar;
And thousands of times have I wished myself at home
And all along with my Polly on the shore.

She's a tall and a slender girl,
She's a dark and a-roving eye,
But here am I lie a-bleeding on the deck
And for her sweet sake I shall die.

So farewell to me parents and me friends,
Farethewell, my dear Polly too.
I never should have crossed this salt sea so wide
If I had have been ruled by you.
Track Name: If I Were a Blackbird
LYRICS:

I am a young maiden, my story is sad,
For once I was carefree and in love with a lad.
He courted me sweetly by night and by day,
But now my dear sailor has sailed far away.

Oh if I were a blackbird I'd whistle and sing,
I'd follow the vessel my true love sails in.
And in the top rigging, I'd there build my nest,
And I'd flutter my wings o’er his broad golden chest.

He promised to take me to Donnybrook Fair,
To buy me fine ribbons to tie up my hair.
He promised to marry and to stay by my side,
But then in the morning he sailed with the tide.

Oh if I were a blackbird I'd whistle and sing,
I'd follow the vessel my true love sails in.
And in the top rigging, I'd there build my nest,
And I'd flutter my wings o’er his broad golden chest.

He sailed o’er the ocean his fortune to seek,
I missed his caresses and his kiss on my cheek.
He returned and I told him my love was still warm,
But he turned away lightly and great was his scorn.

Oh if I were a blackbird I'd whistle and sing,
I'd follow the vessel my true love sails in.
And in the top rigging, I'd there build my nest,
And I'd flutter my wings o’er his broad golden chest.

I sing of my sorrow, my grief and my pain,
Since he’s gone and left me till I know not when.
But let him deprive me, let him go where he will,
While there’s breath in my body he’s my sailor lad still.

Oh if I were a blackbird I'd whistle and sing,
I'd follow the vessel my true love sails in.
And in the top rigging, I'd there build my nest,
And I'd flutter my wings o’er his broad golden chest.
Track Name: White Cockade
LYRICS:

It's true, my love's enlisted and he wears the white cockade.
He is a handsome young man, likewise a roving blade.
He is a handsome young man, most right to serve a king.
Oh my very, oh my very heart is breaking all for the loss of him.

As I roved out one morning, as I wandered o'er yon moss,
I had no thoughts of 'listing 'till a soldier did me cross.
He kindly did invite me to take a flowing bowl.
He advanced, he advanced me the money, two guineas and a crown.

My love is tall and handsome and comely for to see,
But by a sad misfortune a soldier now is he.
May the man that first enlisted him not prosper night and day.
How I wish that, how I wish that he may perish all in the foaming spray.

And may he never prosper and may he never thrive
At all he puts his hands upon as long as he's alive.
May the very ground he treads upon the grass refuse to grow
Since he has been the, since he has been the only cause of my sorrow grief and woe.

Then he's taken out the handkerchief to wipe the flowing eye.
Wipe up, wipe up them flowing tears, likewise those mournful sighs.
And be you of good courage love, 'till I return again.
You and I, love, you and I, love, will be married when I return again.
Track Name: The Eddystone Light
LYRICS:

My father was the keeper of the Eddystone Light.
And he slept with a mermaid one fine night.
From this union there came three,
A porky and a porpoise and the other was me.

Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for a life on the rolling sea.

'Twas late one night I was a-trimmin' of the glim
And singing a verse of an evening hymn
A voice from starboard I heard a shout, "Ahoy"
And there was me mother sitting on the buoy.

Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for a life on the rolling sea.
.
"Oh what has become of me children three?"
Me mother then she asked of me.
"One was exhibited as a talking fish
And the other was served on a chafing dish!"

Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for a life on the rolling sea.

The phosphorus flashed in her seaweed hair.
I looked again, but me mother wasn't there.
A voice cam echoing out of the night,
"To hell with the keeper of the Eddystone Light!"

Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for a life on the rolling sea.
Track Name: Leave Her, Johnny
LYRICS:

I thought I heard the old man say,
"Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
It's a long hard pull to the next pay day
And it's time for us to leave her."

Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her.
It's a long hard pull to the next pay day
And it's time for us to leave her.

The captain was bad but the mate was worse,
Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
He could blow you down with a sigh and a curse
And it's time for us to leave her.

Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her,
He could blow you down with a sigh and a curse
And it's time for us to leave her.

And a dollar a day is a Jack Shite's pay.
Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
When it's pump all night and it's work all day
And it's time for us to leave her.

Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her,
When it's pump all night and it's work all day
And it's time for us to leave her.

Now the rats are all gone and we the crew,
Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
Well, it's time, by Christ, that we left too
And it's time for us to leave her.

Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her,
Well, it's time, by Christ, that we left too
And it's time for us to leave her.

Well it's pump or drown, the old man said,
Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
Or else, by Christ, we'd all be dead
And it's time for us to leave her.

Leave her, Johnny, leave her,
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her,
Well, it's time, by Christ, that we left too
And it's time for us to leave her.
Track Name: Edelweisspiraten

Versteht man gut, versteht man gut.
